Compass calibration and safe use

Move the phone slowly in a figure-eight pattern, then hold it flat away from magnets, vehicles, speakers, metal tables and power cables. Compare north with a known landmark or a proper compass before relying on it.

Some phones do not contain a magnetometer. When available, GPS heading can provide direction while you are moving, but it will not reliably show direction while standing still.

Use every feature safely

Satnav Safety Guide

Set everything up while parked, keep the phone securely mounted and let spoken directions do the work.

Never hold or programme the phone while driving.Stop somewhere legal and safe first. Being stopped at traffic lights or in a queue does not make handheld phone use safe or lawful.
1 · Before starting

Secure the phone in a suitable mount without blocking your view. Set the destination, route type, vehicle, return option, avoidance settings and voice before moving. Check the full route and follow road signs over the app.

2 · Direct and coastal routes

Direct route navigates to the destination without attraction detours. Coastal adventure includes selected coastal stops. Review every stop while parked before pressing Start navigation.

3 · Voice directions and map

The next instruction, following manoeuvre, distance and estimated arrival appear on screen and are spoken aloud. Choose and test the voice while parked. When voice mode has been enabled while parked, supported phones recognise “Adventure repeat”, “Adventure mute”, “Adventure unmute”, “Adventure route overview” and “Adventure find a safe stop”. A safe-stop suggestion must be confirmed by saying “Route there”. GPS, map and place information can be delayed or inaccurate.

4 · Offline Maps & Routes

While connected, build the journey and press Download offline map pack. The app saves the route, spoken turns, adventure stops and map areas around the start, destination and stops. GPS normally continues without mobile data, but live traffic, closures and roadworks do not. Always follow road signs and carry another suitable map.

5 · Motorhomes, campervans and caravans

Select a vehicle profile containing the full travelling height, width, length and maximum permitted weight before building the route. Vehicle-aware routing avoids recorded restrictions where the specialist route service is configured, but road data can be missing or wrong. Never drive beneath a bridge or past a restriction unless the signed clearance is safe for your complete vehicle and load.

6 · Driver break reminders

The app measures GPS-detected moving time and warns before two hours. Stop somewhere safe—not a motorway hard shoulder. The 15-minute timer starts only after GPS confirms the vehicle is stationary and pauses if movement or GPS loss is detected. Stop sooner whenever tired.

7 · Adventure Alerts

Verified community reports can be announced automatically. On-screen reporting and confirmation controls remain locked while moving and unlock only after reliable GPS confirms the phone has been stationary for 10 seconds. Reports can be wrong, delayed or incomplete.

8 · Points and badges

Points reward useful community information—not speed, distance or phone use. A report earns points only after other signed-in users confirm it. You cannot confirm your own report, and reports expire automatically.

9 · Voice reporting

On supported browsers, sign in and enable voice reporting while parked for at least 10 seconds. Then say “Adventure, report hazard”, name one listed hazard, and say “Submit” only after the app reads it back correctly. Unclear speech is cancelled and reports remain unverified until confirmed. The microphone is used only while this mode is enabled and navigation is open. Browser voice support is not guaranteed; if unavailable, stop legally and safely before using the screen.

10 · Backup navigation

The app’s satnav is the main option. Google Maps is kept inside Backup navigation for route-service or GPS problems. Choose the backup only while parked.

11 · Emergencies and limitations

For immediate danger to life call 999 or 112. At the coast, ask for the Coastguard. Community reports and satnav information are never guaranteed. The driver remains responsible for signs, restrictions, vehicle dimensions and safe decisions.
